Position:          Wildlife Biologist I – PPAL Siuslaw (2 positions)

Salary:             $3,000/month, shared housing provided

Field surveys on avian point counts and setting bat acoustic detectors in forested coastal Oregon for a multifaceted project titled “Pollinator Partnerships Across Landscapes”. This research is paired with a regional pollinator (native bee) research effort.  We are intensively monitoring pollinator populations and available flowering plants for an upcoming floral enhancement project.  Because we hope floral resources will positively impact portions of the insect communities, we also aim to collect data on species that consume such insects (and nectar). Our objectives will be to 1) collect information on avian and bat species richness within sub-basin watersheds that differ in average stand age as part of a landscape-scale replicated study, 2) combine surveys with stand level metrics such as age and size as well as existing floral resources. Primary duties of crew members will consist of avian point counts, setting up acoustic equipment, evaluating data for errors, and entering data. Shared housing will be provided but camping will also be required at more remote locations.

Essential Job Functions:

1.    Conduct bird point counts.

2.    Collect vegetation/habitat data.

3.    Position will require working outdoors in inclement weather, often in recently harvested forest stands.  Must be able to get to and work from remote locations, drive forest roads, read maps, navigate through a forested landscape, and relate well with the public. Camping will be required using your own equipment, but supplemented with team supplies (e.g., stove).

4.    Gather and analyze data and related information.

5.    Willingness to have a flexible work schedule.     

6.    Demonstrate an ability to work effectively with others toward meeting the goals of NCASI.

7.    Develop a familiarity with NCASI’s mission, policies, practices, and procedures.

8.    Become acquainted with the environmental issues of the forest products industry.

9.    Read, absorb, process, and communicate complex information. Assist the supervisor in responding to technical queries by NCASI clients and others in a competent and timely manner. 

10.  Possess ability to carry-out associated field work that may involve prolonged (multi-day) exposure to inclement conditions and a necessity to hike carrying equipment (20 pounds or more) over rough terrain (for 2 miles or more).

Additional Responsibilities and Requirements:

1.    Undertakes additional activities as assigned by Supervisor.

2.    Follow all COVID safety protocols.

3.    Provide proof of full COVID vaccination.

Minimum Qualifications:

1.    Junior or senior standing as an undergraduate (>3 years college education and >2 seasons prior field work) or a degree in a biological sciences discipline or related environmental field and knowledge of passerine identification by sight and song.

2.    Must have driving record which can be approved by Federal Agencies to drive government vehicles and can be insured at standard rates.

3.    Basic data entry experience (Microsoft Excel).

Additional Qualifications:

1.    Local passerine ID experience (west of the Cascades in N. California, Oregon or Washington).
