    Job Description:

With climate change, British Columbia is seeing more severe weather. We aim to look into how temperature fluctuations affect a charismatic medium forest owl, the Western Screech-Owl. The project will be based out of Kelowna, but remote work will occur throughout the Okanagan Valley. We are looking for a skilled, enthusiastic technician capable of working in remote off trail areas.

The summer field assistant will help monitor Western Screech-owl nests, collect owl pellets, conduct owl surveys, vegetation surveys, and track tagged owls, in addition to some lab work (analyzing owl pellets, categorizing camera trap and acoustic data, etc.). Later in the season field assistants will help with mist-netting and capturing immature owls for tagging. Field work for this position includes long nights in remote areas and a good amount of driving. Field assistants are expected to safely handle small birds of prey, record and manage data, and communicate effectively with those in the field. The successful candidate will work directly with Megan Buers, M.Sc. student in the field for the full season, and will work under and report to PI, Dr. Karen Hodges.

    To apply:

Send cover letter and CV via email to Megan Buers (megan.buers@ubc.ca). Please address email as "Western Screech-Owl Technician 2023".
