I am looking for one volunteer to assist my project studying the causes and consequences of female ornamentation in White-shouldered Fairywrens for 1-2 months in July-August this year. The volunteer would be responsible for round-trip travel to Kiunga, Western Province, Papua New Guinea. I will cover travel to the field site from Kiunga (flight or boat to Obo village), research visa, and food and housing costs. The volunteer could also join research activities In Milne Bay Province, but they would be responsible for flights to/ from Alotau.
The volunteer will work closely with me and local PNG field assistants and may have some activities to complete independently. Research activities are predominantly target mist-netting and potentially behavioral assays. Ideally, applicants will have some experience setting up mist-nets, extracting birds from nets, and re-sighting color-banded birds. However, experience is not a must— but the ability to thrive in a remote location with heat and humidity and without electricity, running water, or modern comforts is essential. A strong sense of adventure and the ability to adapt to new and challenging circumstances is an absolute must. Applicants should have strong interpersonal skills and be excited about experiencing the uniquely vibrant PNG culture as our project prioritizes participation in village life in our research communities.
