Technician position (1): fieldwork on snow and Ross’s geese in central Canadian Arctic

Description: we are seeking a technician to join a field crew of eight to be based at a remote field camp in the Queen Maud Gulf (Ahiak) Migratory Bird Sanctuary in Nunavut, Canada to study the breeding ecology of lesser snow and Ross’s geese. This will be a two-month appointment (mid-May to mid-July 2023). Data to be collected include goose arrival dates, nest initiation, egg incubation stage and hatching success. These data will augment 30+ years of information collected at this snow and Ross’s geese nesting colony. The technician may also participate in related Arctic work near the camp, including on shorebird breeding and habitat ecology. This research is an international partnership among Environment and Climate Change Canada, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Arctic Goose Joint Venture, Central Flyway Council, Mississippi Flyway Council and University of Saskatchewan.

Prerequisites: Applicants must have Arctic fieldwork experience and first aid certification (wilderness first aid preferred). Applicants should be comfortable working in cold/snowy and hot/buggy conditions, and walking 10-15 km per day. Ideal candidates will have strong interpersonal skills, as well as experience/familiarity with firearms, outboard motors and GPS navigation, and knowledge of migratory bird ecology and management.

Stipend: $957.44 CDN per week (~$10,531.84 CDN for the period; food and travel costs will be covered)
