STATION (BANDING) ASSISTANT required for a very busy Migration Monitoring Station in Ontario, Canada.

For the spring banding season (end April - end May), a volunteer assistant is now immediately required to

help with the banding and migration monitoring at Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory (PEPtBO) in

Ontario, Canada. The Observatory is located on the north shore of Lake Ontario, 125 km east of

Toronto (30 km from Picton, the nearest town).

Assistants should have a strong work ethic and need to assist seven days a week. Occasionally some days may be longer than 8 hours of operation.

    Duties include

helping the Bander-In-Charge with carrying out the Station’s programs

helping with the banding and extractions

    collecting casual observations

    entering some data

helping keep the house clean and tidy

    greeting visitors

occasional light maintenance duties around the station

reading and following the station protocol

    interacting with day volunteers

A typical day involves opening the nets at sunrise; extracting, banding and casual observations for the next six hours and then closing nets. Station Assistants are expected to keep notes of birds seen during the day and contribute to the evening log. The rest of the afternoon and evening are free time.

Any days off are by arrangement with the Board.

PEPtBO adheres to the NABC guidelines when banding and follows a standardized protocol that operates 19 passerine nets, a J-trap, 6 ground traps, and consequently at times very large numbers of migrants can be banded as such a few days of 2-300 birds banded can be expected in the spring but on most days 100 (+/-) birds are banded.

Food and accommodation are provided at the Observatory which has most modern amenities (inc WIFI); laundry can be done in Picton, the nearest town.

A small honorarium is available at the end of the season.

    Qualifications:

The successful applicant should be aware that this is a very demanding position and we are looking for someone who has experience in banding (i.e. ideally they will have banded more than 1000 birds and be fairly comfortable with extracting birds) although enthusiasm and a willingness to learn quickly will be considered.

If you are interested in this position, please send a resume with banding experience (including any banding permit details if applicable) and the contact information for two references, to the Station Manager - David Okines (EM: david.okines@gmail.com) ASAP, this position will continue to be open until filled.

Only suitably qualified applicants will be considered.
