  • Spring Bird Banding Intern AND Volunteer

    Ben Nickley
    • Employer: Berkshire Bird Observatory
      Location: Egremont, MA
      Country: United States
      Last Date to Apply: 02/15/2025
      Open Until Filled: Yes

Berkshire Bird Observatory is hiring a songbird banding intern AND recruiting a banding volunteer for the spring 2025 season.  We are looking for people who *love* birds and are eager to improve their banding skills.

Our spring season runs from April 1st through June 3rd.  There is a possibility of continuing through summer depending on funding and housing.

We will provide phenomenal housing in the best region in the US--the Berkshires of western Massachusetts.

We can also provide a modest stipend of $1,000 for the intern position.

    Qualifications:

A love of birds and banding. Ability to work early mornings, potentially 7 day/week. We're looking for someone who doesn't consider bird banding 'work'.  Good ID skills of eastern birds and a desire to learn more about ID and ageing and sexing birds in the hand.  College degree in biological field preferred (though not required). Some field experience and love of the outdoors. Great dexterity. Ability to hike quickly over hilly terrain. Ability to deal with biting insects, muddy trails and varied field conditions with good humor! For the banding intern, some mist-netting/banding experience is required.  The volunteer needs only eager enthusiasm to learn.

We particularly welcome applications from underrepresented groups in science and ecology!

Let us know if you have a car—we need to hire at least one person with reliable transportation.

If you're interested, please email a cover letter and your CV as a combined PDF with "BBO spring intern 2025 (your name)" in the subject line to Ben: ben@berkshirebirds.org.
