    Erie Bird Observatory is seeking one seasonal field technician to assist with passerine research in Northwest Pennsylvania for seven-weeks, April 13th – May 31st, 2023. The primary duties of this position are extracting birds from mist nets and assisting with banding as a part of EBO’s spring migration banding crew.


    • We are a high-volume station and, as such, successful applicants will have extensive experience extracting, handling, and banding songbirds, including at least one season’s experience at a similarly high-volume station (2,500+ birds/month). Volunteer experience also acceptable.
    • Must be able to identify eastern North American birds by sight, and be able to hike up to 6-10 miles per day in uneven or muddy terrain and in inclement weather.
    • Must possess a strong dedication to maintaining data integrity. Must be able to accurately (and legibly) record data in outdoor field conditions.  Must be computer/tablet literate and capable of entering and managing data in Excel (computer access will be provided).
    • Must be comfortable interacting with the general public as our station welcomes over 700 visitors each spring.
    • Flexibility to work irregular hours due to changing weather is necessary.
    • Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team.
    • Must provide own vehicle and have a valid driver’s license.

    Although not required, the most successful of candidates will also:

    • Have previous environmental interpretation experience and/or teaching skills.
    • Be comfortable using various social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) to relay information regarding EBO’s banding program in a manner consistent with NABC guidelines.   
    • Hold NABC certification at the banding assistant level or higher. 

    Principal Accountabilities:

    The principal responsibility of this position is assisting the Banding Program Manager with EBO’s migration banding and outreach efforts at Presque Isle State Park, Erie, PA. This includes: extracting birds from mist nets, banding and/or otherwise collecting data from birds, repairing nets, clearing and trimming vegetation around net lanes, recording and proofing data, assisting with training and coordinating volunteers, and interacting with the general public (both online and in person) in the form of bird banding demos and/or similar outreach and education methods.

    Compensation: $600 per week/ $4,200 for the season. EBO can assist with locating short-term housing.
