UC Davis is seeking field technicians to conduct surveys for California Spotted Owls in the Sierra Nevada. This is part of a long-term research project conducted since 1990. We are filling positions in two locations and applicants must apply to each location separately to be considered for both locations. We will be filling both crew positions (Lab Assistant 1) and crew lead positions (Lab Assistant 2).
Start dates range from March 27th to mid May and the survey season ends early to late September.
Lab Assistant 1
Under the supervision of the Field Project Leader, the Field Technicians will:
1. Perform Forest Field study surveys for California Spotted Owls and other wildlife species.
2. Conduct nocturnal and diurnal surveys for owls to determine occupancy, nesting and reproductive status.
3. Collect data following a prescribed protocol.
4. May assist in the capture and banding of spotted owls.
5. Navigate on public and private road systems without direct supervision.
6. Locate off-road study sites using compass, topographic maps and/or GPS unit.
7. Record field data in a legible manner.
8. Enter field data onto a computer database.
Lab Assistant 2
With minimal supervision of the Field Project Leader, the Field Technicians will:
1. Perform Forest Field study surveys for California Spotted Owls and other wildlife species.
2. Conduct nocturnal and diurnal surveys for owls to determine occupancy, nesting and reproductive status.
3. Collect data following a prescribed protocol.
4. Captures and bands spotted owls.
5. Assists in training new employees in survey techniques and protocol requirements.
6. Assists Field Project Leader with daily tasks such as data proofing and daily or weekly survey schedules.
7. Locate off-road study sites using compass, topographic maps and/or GPS unit.
8. Record field data in a legible manner.
9. Enter field data onto a computer database.
