WildResearch looking for volunteers to help found our new Shorebirds Operations Committee!

This year will mark our second season monitoring shorebirds at Iona Beach Regional Park. In collaboration with Environment and Climate Change Canada, this project has two objectives: 1) banding and deploying radio telemetry nanotags on Western Sandpipers to track habitat use during migration, and 2) conducting standardized shorebird counts to monitor stopover use of Sturgeon Banks (Iona) in both the spring and fall seasons.

We are looking for 2-3 volunteers to form the inaugural Shorebird Operations Committee. This committee will be in charge of the day-to-day organization and facilitation of our shorebird banding efforts. The field season begins in late April and ends in mid-August. The expected time commitment will be about 1-5 hours per week, with peaks in activity at the beginning of April, and during fall monitoring in mid-July and mid-August. There will be little time commitment during May and June.

    Qualifications:

    • Enthusiasm for community science, non-profit organizations, and science communication
    • Organizational & communication skills, and ability to lead a team
    • Passion for birds and migration

    Bonuses (not required):

    • General shorebird or bird banding experience
    • A means of transportation, in case of emergency

    Duties:

    • Recruiting and scheduling WildResearch volunteers to participate in capture and survey events
    • Facilitating banding operations by communicating with the bander-in-charge, assistant bander, and shorebird surveyor (e.g., making sure equipment and keys are available)
    • Responding to issues that arise during the field season (i.e., lost keys or nets)
    • Maintaining a consistent dialogue with the banders to keep up-to-date with how the field season is going (e.g., number of birds caught, nanotags deployed per day) and fielding any questions they may have
    • Collect the final data and enter it into Excel after each capture period
    • Report progress and issues to the liaison on the board, with a committee meeting once per capture period (April, July, August)

If you’re interested in joining the new Shorebird Operations Committee, please email Devin de Zwaan at <ddezwaan@wildresearch.ca>.
