    The Opportunity.

    The Trustees of Reservations are seeking qualified Individuals to assist with monitoring, research, and management activities for nesting and migratory shorebirds at Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge, Nantucket (1,117 acres). The Shorebird Technician is part of a team responsible for barrier beach protection and management.

    The Coskata-Coatue Shorebird Technician position is a 30 hour a week, seasonal, non-exempt, position.  The anticipated start date is in April 1st with an end date in August 31st.  Housing referrals can be made for the candidate. 

     

    In This Role You Will.

    Perform daily monitoring and management activities for breeding piping plovers, terns, and American oystercatchers, including habitat delineation, nest location, nest protection, chick monitoring, and data entry;

    Assist with preparing daily reports on the breeding status and location of nesting shorebirds and communicate with the Coastal Ecologist and property management staff to ensure the successful implementation of our barrier beach protection program;

    Assist with the collection of migratory shorebird abundance and distribution data;

    Install, maintain, and remove symbolic fencing, predator exclosures, and signage used to protect breeding and migratory shorebirds as well as other sensitive barrier beach habitats;

    Assist with targeted predator control and monitoring efforts;

    Assist in compilation of data for state piping plover, tern, and American oystercatcher census forms;

    Educate the public about shorebird and barrier beach ecology;

    Educate the staff about the shorebird program and work with staff to form a team spirit to protect the wildlife and habitat;

    Monitor the property for targeted rare and invasive species;

    Assist in the control of invasive species;

    Assist site staff with stewardship and property maintenance tasks to protect that habitat;

    Other tasks and duties as assigned.

    Other Information

    Qualifications:

    Coursework in wildlife biology, ecology, zoology, environmental science, or related field;

    The ability to identify shorebirds by sight and sound;

    3 months of previous field experience preferred;

    Strong verbal communication skills;

    The ability to work closely with other staff and the public;

    The ability to work independently.

     

    Preferred Applicants will have Experience with:

    Beach-nesting shorebirds on the Atlantic coast;

    Behavioral data collection;

    Wildlife tracking;

    Coastal wildlife management issues;

    GIS mapping;

    Speaking to public about regulations protecting protected species.

     

    Other Requirements:

    The ability to work outdoors daily, and at times, under rigorous conditions;

    The ability to drive UTV or 4x4 truck in soft sand;

    The ability to perform physically strenuous duties, such as hiking long distances on the beach;

    The ability to lift/carry 20 pounds;

    The ability to occasionally work all weekends, holidays, and irregular hours (depending upon wildlife and weather);

    A valid driver’s license, as well as a satisfactory driving record as outlined in The Trustees’ driving policy;

    A satisfactory criminal background check (CORI).

     

    Compensation.

    $19/hr
