    Position Summary

    The Land Steward will work at Stratford Point, a sanctuary managed by Audubon Connecticut and part of a globally Important Bird Area, located in Stratford, CT.  The Land Steward will work with the site manager to determine priorities, then implement management which may include removal of invasive plants, tending to gardens, re-seeding of bird seed garden, watering and more. He/she will maintain regular communication with partners, volunteers, and visitors as the land steward is often the first point of contact with visitors to the site. The Land Steward will also recruit, organize and implement volunteer days, which will may include removing litter and invasive plants and enhancing native plant gardens.  Lastly, the Land Steward will assist with coastal waterbird monitoring at local sites (one day per week). The Seasonal Land Steward will work 35 hrs/week from April 1st to Oct. 18th. Pay is $13-14.25/hr.

    Essential Functions

    • Work with site manager to determine priorities for management, then implement
    • Communicate with partners, volunteers, and visitors
    • Recruit, organize and implement volunteer work days as needed
    • Maintain native plant gardens and secondary trail system
    • Monitoring of beach nesting birds for productivity at local sites and entering data into online database
    • Additional duties may be assigned

    Qualifications and Experience

    • Self-motivated individual who can work well independently in the field
    • Ability to work outside in various weather situations
    • Ability to work weekends and holidays
    • Experience with interacting with visitors
    • Extensive knowledge of birds, butterflies and their habitat needs and identification
    • Ability to lift 50 pounds and hike site (steep rocky slopes)
    • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills, including the ability to work with a variety of audiences: volunteers, staff, the general public and others
    • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science or similar field or equivalent experience required
