    Position Summary

    Reporting to the Audubon Mississippi’s Biologist, the Coastal Bird Technician will conduct breeding and migratory coastal bird surveys. This will include conducting Audubon Coastal Bird Surveys for migratory shorebirds during the spring and fall, monitoring tern and skimmer colonies, searching for and monitoring plover nests, and assisting with banding operations. S/he will help lead and mentor junior staff including seasonal interns and volunteers, and will assist the seasonal stewards in roping and signing areas to protect nesting sites against the threats of human disturbance. The Coastal Bird Technician will assist with data quality assurance and entry, volunteer management, outreach and education, and research efforts that inform Audubon’s stewardship and protection initiatives in the area.

    This is a full-time, six-month position beginning March 15, 2021 that requires occasional weekend and holiday work. Pay is $16/hr. Housing is not provided, but assistance finding housing may be available.

    Essential Functions

    • Conduct coastal bird surveys during spring migratory season
    • Monitor nesting terns, skimmers, and plovers during the breeding season
    • Assist with banding of terns, skimmers, and plovers
    • Resight banded birds
    • Assist in setting up study areas. This may include roping and posting off an area, setting out decoys, setting up camera traps, and placing audio playback system.
    • Interact with volunteer community scientists and provide technical assistance in bird identification and with monitoring protocols
    • Participate in other research and non-research activities as assigned
    • Ensure timely and accurate data collection and reporting, and ensure that all monitoring efforts follow approved protocols and best management practices as established by Audubon
    • Provide assistance to the Stewardship Manager in building volunteer community science teams and organizing and implementing volunteer events
    • Maintain productive working relationships with all partnering organizations, agencies, groups and individuals participating in the program
    • Steward priority breeding colonies on July 4th holiday
    • Maintain proper care and inventory of all project equipment and vehicles

    Qualifications and Experience

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Ornithology, Wildlife Biology, Ecology, Natural Resources, or a related field.
    • 2+ years experience and demonstrated success in avian monitoring including bird identification by sight and sound.
    • Knowledge of birds and their habitats, with specific experience monitoring coastal shorebirds, wading birds, gulls and terns.
    • Experience capturing, handling, and banding birds, particularly shorebirds or terns, preferred
    • Experience leading or mentoring junior staff in field methods
    • Excellent oral and written communications skills
    • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to lead and work as part of a team.
    • Willingness and flexibility to work nonstandard hours (early mornings, evenings, etc) and weekends as the job demands.
    • Ability to perform tasks requiring physical exertion, outdoors, in all weather conditions, on difficult terrain, and in and out of boats while maintaining a positive attitude, with or without accommodation.
    • Flexibility in schedule that accommodates weather conditions, with ability to work occasional weekends or holidays.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs such as Excel, Word and PowerPoint, and knowledge of eBird
