Description
SEASONAL BURROWING OWL BIOLOGIST needed for Burrowing Owl monitoring, management, and research on Lemoore Naval Air Base in central California. The successful applicant will work with a PhD student. Primary duties include 1) conducting standardized call-broadcast and walking transect surveys for Burrowing Owls, 2) monitoring active Burrowing Owl nests with regular visits and through the use of trail cameras, 3) trapping and banding adult and nestling Burrowing Owls, 4) reviewing and transcribing camera images from Burrowing Owl nests, 5) resighting banded burrowing owls, and 6) data entry (excel, ArcGIS pro, Survey 123, ArcGIS FieldMaps).
This position will be full time beginning in mid-late March through August 2023 (exact dates somewhat flexible). $15-20 per hour, depending on experience. Housing near the base will be provided. A project vehicle will be provided for work use. Potential for winter field work (Sept-Mar) and/or returning to the same position in future years.
Required qualifications
-excellent physical condition, willing to work long and unusual hours (including early morning and night) in the field under hot, dry, wet, windy, dusty, and other adverse weather conditions
-excellent attention to detail
-able to pass a background check to work on military installations
-in possession of a valid driver’s license.
-good vision and hearing
Preferred qualifications but not required
-experience surveying for birds
-experience monitoring bird nests
-experience handling, capturing, and processing birds
-experience resighting birds and using optics (binoculars, spotting scope)
-experience using trail cameras and processing photos
-experience using ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS fieldmaps, survey 123, excel, R, or other computer programs
-ability to work independently
