We are seeking two (2) seasonal avian field technicians to assist a M.S. student with her work involving wintering, migratory stop-over, and nesting bird surveys in cover crop systems located in middle and western Tennessee. This project is funded by the Natural Resource and Conservation Service (NRCS) and is focused on looking at the relative abundance of birds utilizing cover crop systems as habitat during these three critical time periods. In 2016-2017, over 94,000 acres of cover crops were planted across parts of Tennessee as an incentive for farmers by NRCS. The project hopes to gain valuable data to help determine whether or not the implementation of these crops benefit avian species as habitat and food sources. The field season will occur between January 15th until June 15th (5 months). Selected technicians will gain skills in a variety of avian field techniques while also working in a unique system and migratory pathway for birds.
Duties include conducting line transect surveys during the wintering and migratory stop-over periods, potential supplemental bird banding opportunities (as needed), nest searching and monitoring, data entry, and maintenance of equipment as needed.
Preferred Qualifications include:
- Excellent bird ID via sight and sound. Migration can provide a plethora of interesting birds to our field sites so identification is not limited to just species commonly found in rural TN.
- A strong work ethic and dedication to conservation practices.
- A good, professional attitude and outgoing nature. Technicians may be in a position where they must interact with the landowners of our field sites.
- Ability to drive 4WD vehicles in potentially muddy, icy, and snowy conditions.
- Be in good physical condition and can weather both the cold winter seasons as well as the hot summer season. Technicians may be required to spend multiple hours in the field if weather allows.
- Ability to live in close quarters with two others and the flexibility to adapt to quick changes in schedule if needed.
Work weeks will be 5 days a week with early morning starts. Technicians are expected to enter data upon returning from the field. UT vehicles will be provided for work purposes only. Compensation is approximately $1500/month (~$9/hour) with housing provided.
Due to COVID-19, hired technicians may be required to quarantine prior to start date.
