  • Seabirds and the Oceans Outreach Fellow

    Guest Maggie Lee Post
    • Employer: Farallon Institute
Location: San Francisco Bay Area, CA
      Country: United States
      Last Date to Apply: 02/17/2023
      Open Until Filled: No

    Farallon Institute, a Petaluma-based non-profit (501(c) 3) ocean research and conservation
organization, seeks an intern for marine science communications and outreach to the public
during summer 2023. The Fellow will engage with the public on Alcatraz Island (San Francisco
Bay) and at Bodega Head (coastal Sonoma County) during the seabird breeding season
(roughly May–August, in 2023 and possibly 2024). With the support of Farallon Institute staff,
the Fellow will help prepare and share materials about the effects of climate change on marine
ecosystems using seabirds as examples. The Fellow will also aid in developing digital and
traditional hard-copy educational materials based in part on a new research project, funded by
the National Science Foundation, to examine global changes in seabird productivity in relation
    to changes in ocean habitats.

Applicants are preferably proficient in both English and Spanish, must be willing to work outdoors in
sometimes inclement weather conditions such as wind and rain, and have a personal vehicle for
transportation (gas/mileage costs will be covered). The ideal applicant should have a strong
interest in nature, conservation, and marine science, but the position is primarily public outreach
and therefore skills in communication and engagement with the public are critical. The Fellow
will be trained on the scientific content. Fieldwork is anticipated to be conducted over 26 days
from about mid-May through August in 2023 and possibly 2024. The start date is flexible, but we
would prefer if the Fellow is available for occasional meetings and trainings in April 2023.

Continuation of the position in 2024 will be based on review of the Fellow’s performance in
2023. Remuneration: stipend ($2000/month for four months). All travel costs will be reimbursed.
To apply, please send a cover letter and contact information for one professional or academic
reference to bhoover@faralloninstitute.org by Friday February 17th,
    2023.
