The San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research is seeking Research Assistant to conduct and support daily husbandry and conservation breeding activities at the Maui Bird Conservation Center in Olinda, Hawaii and at associated field sites.
The Maui Bird Conservation Center is one of two conservation breeding facilities in Hawaii for critically endangered native birds. As part of the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research and the Hawai‘i Endangered Bird Conservation Program, this facility is a crucial component of intensive conservation and reintroduction efforts for critically endangered avian species such as the ‘Alalā, ‘Akikiki, Palila, Kiwikiu, and ‘Akeke‘e.
The successful applicant will join a team that provides a high standard of care to endangered Hawaiian birds. Responsibilities may include: maintaining aviaries, facilities, equipment, and grounds; preparing and provisioning food; cleaning and perching aviaries; managing reproduction in breeding pairs; observing and recording reproductive and social behaviors; assisting with veterinary care; detailed record keeping; entering and managing data; and other duties as assigned.
Qualifications include: a degree in any of the sciences such as biology, wildlife sciences, conservation, and animal husbandry; practical skills that are useful for facility maintenance; valid/current drivers license and in good standing with the DMV; ability to identify diverse colored identification bands on birds.
This position will require working with federally listed endangered species, and all applicants must meet U.S. Fish and Wildlife requirements for permits. Scheduled hours will be approximately 40 hours per week
The start date for this position is June 2019. This is a temporary position of approximately six months but no more than 12 months.
