Description:
Technicians needed to assist with long term research studying sagebrush-nesting songbirds in western Wyoming. The initial research for this project began in 2008 and is examining the effects of habitat loss associated with energy development on sagebrush obligate songbird species and their predator suite.
Study sites will be located on two natural gas fields: the Jonah Gas field and Pinedale Anticline, outside of Pinedale, Wyoming. Primary duties include: locating songbird nests (Brewer’s sparrow, sagebrush sparrow and sage thrasher), monitoring nests, setting up and maintaining infrared nest cameras, and vegetation surveys. Technicians will also assist with data entry, additional experiments, and maintenance/repair of field equipment when needed. Work will start early May and continue until the middle/end of August, with some flexibility for start and end dates. Applicants should have a strong work ethic and a desire to work long hours outside under potentially inclement weather conditions. This is an excellent opportunity to gain ecological research experience on a long term study, gain a wide variety of field experience, and spend your summer in a beautiful setting.
Shared housing and work vehicles will be provided for the field season. Pay is ~$1600-$1900/month, depending on experience.
Qualifications:
Interested applicants should have a valid US driver’s license with a clean driving record. Applicants with a proven interest in wildlife biology will be given closest consideration. Previous experience with nest searching, monitoring, and working with nest cameras is preferred but not required. Applicants must be comfortable living in a remote setting for the summer, hiking long distances in varying conditions, and working both independently and in close contact with coworkers. Above all else, enthusiasm for the work, a strong work ethic, and a positive attitude in the field are important.
