The University of Montana Bird Ecology Lab (UMBEL) is hiring two experienced field technicians to conduct point count surveys in high-elevation sagebrush habitats of southwestern Montana. Surveys will be conducted on public and private lands near Dillon, Montana in some of the most scenic montane landscapes in the region. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a large multi-partner sagebrush conservation effort. Technicians will work independently conducting point counts, habitat sampling, and data entry. Work entails travel by 4WD on rough two-track roads and off-trail hiking in mountainous terrain to access field sites. Most work days will require camping in remote areas, with weekly access to facilities and housing. Work will extend from mid-May to end of July, with some flexibility for start/end date. Typical schedule will be 5-8 days working, followed by 2-4 days off (schedule is dependent upon weather and location).
Compensation
Full-time seasonal position with salary range of $16-$17 per hour, DOE plus a daily per diem for camping. We will provide a work truck and mileage reimbursement for any work-related travel in personal vehicle.
Qualifications
Applicants must have at least one season of experience conducting point counts, and ability to identify western bird species by sight and sound. Candidates with previous experience in sagebrush systems preferred. This is physically demanding work that requires daily hiking in steep terrain, working alone in remote areas, and excellent navigational skills. Applicants must be self-motivated, have experience implementing field work independently under changing field conditions, and possess strong organizational skills. Ability to communicate clearly with public and various agency personnel about work activities is essential. A valid driver’s license is required.
