Description
The University of Montana Bird Ecology Lab (UMBEL) seeks two experienced field technicians to conduct point count surveys for birds in riparian habitats on the Madison and Missouri Rivers in Montana as part of a long-term study of bird populations and habitat change in large river systems. These positions offer an incredible opportunity to explore Montana’s wild and scenic rivers including the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument, while contributing to conservation of riparian bird populations.
Technicians will conduct bird surveys at long-term monitoring points established within river floodplain habitats. Surveys will entail paddling canoes downstream from the nearest river access and hiking short distances to reach survey points. Duties include planning daily surveys with minimal supervision, contacting private landowners for access, habitat sampling, and data entry. Primitive camping and multi-day river pack trips required to access remote sections of river. All staff will follow University of Montana’s safety protocols to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
Schedule
Work will extend from mid-May through end of July (exact dates may be flexible). Typical schedule will be 5-8 days working, followed by 2-4 days off (schedule is dependent upon weather and river access).
Compensation
Full-time seasonal position with pay rate of $16-17 per hour, DOE plus camping per diem. We will provide a rental SUV vehicle or technicians will receive mileage reimbursement for using personal vehicle.
Qualifications
Previous experience conducting point count surveys and ability to identify songbirds by sight and sound is required. Knowledge of western songbirds, especially riparian species, is preferred. Applicants must have a strong background in fieldwork, ability to work independently to plan and implement daily field activities, and experience navigating using a GPS. All applicants must be physically capable of paddling 10+ miles and hiking several miles. We will provide river safety training, but experience paddling canoes or kayaks is a plus. A valid driver’s license is required.
