Rehabilitation Hospital Internship Job Description:
The World Bird Sanctuary Rehabilitation Hospital admits approximately 400 birds a year. We accept any bird of prey as well as wading birds and pelicans. This 6 month internship is meant to be an intensive training opportunity for those interested in a career in wildlife rehabilitation. Interns will gain experience in all phases of the rehabilitation process from intake to release. Once trained the intern will function autonomously as a team member in the hospital and will be relied upon as such. The work week will consist of 5 eight hour days or 4 ten hour days depending on the caseload and time of year. Work days may include Sat, Sun and holidays.
Hospital duties include but are not limited to:
-Daily cleaning of patient enclosures
-Food preparation and distribution
-Maintaining hospital cleanliness: Sweeping, mopping, laundry
-Maintaining patient records and general data entry within RaptorMed
-Safe handling and restraint of patients for procedures
-Preparing and administering medications
-Providing fluid therapy
-Prepping and delivering variety of gavage diets
-Observing and alerting staff to major changes in patients
-Taking blood samples
-Performing lab work: PCV, TS, CBC and fecals
-Performing gross necropsies
- Answering and professionally handling phone calls
-Admit birds and assist with intake exams and triage
-Help to train others including volunteers and general (not hospital specific) interns
Intern will be trained and supervised by hospital staff onsite. Duties may vary slightly based on capability of the individual.
Required Qualifications:
-Must have or be pursuing a BS in an animal related field or an AS in veterinary technology
-Must have a valid driver’s license
-Must be able to lift 50 lbs and be comfortable being on feet for long periods of time
-Must be able to commit to 6 months
-Must be 21 years or older
Preferred Qualifications:
-Highly responsible and dependable
-Able to carry out duties consistently and efficiently
-Detail oriented
-Applicants interested in a career in wildlife rehabilitation will be given preference
-Prior animal care experience is preferred, prior wildlife rehabilitation experience is highly preferred
-Can do attitude and strong work ethic
Compensation
-Free onsite housing is provided
-$200 stipend per month
