The NGO PRONATURA VERACRUZ through the Veracruz River of Raptors is looking for birders to work monitoring the world’s largest raptor migration for the Fall season 2020 in Veracruz Mexico (15th August to November 22nd ).
The season starts with an introduction and orientation to the project’s activities, and the official count starts August 20th. Participants of the season will expect a shared free housing with all services* included but food. Long days with high temperatures, mosquitoes the first half of the season are expected, but can be compensated with wonderful times with days over 100 000 birds on each site, the season begins with the Mississippi and Swallow-tailed Kites followed by Broad-winged Hawk in September being the peak the late September and early October, followed by Swainson’s Hawk in October and Turkey Vultures (this is only talking on the species that raise the 95% of the total count). Along the season we monitor falcons, accipiters, other kites and buteos such Gray Hawk or Common Black-Hawk, besides raptors we also monitor Storks, Ibises, Pelicans, Orioles, Flycatchers and other migratory birds. In Veracruz State more than 40 diurnal raptor species can be found, plus a great diversity of passerines with endemics such Mexican Shear-tail, Bearded Wood-Partridge or the Red Warbler.
The River of Raptors operates 2 counting stations with 3 people in each every day, the team is formed by 9 dedicated observers (6 counters and 3 assistants) that rotates between the 2 monitoring sites, to see what to expect can look data on www.hawkcount.org.
Any position will have the chance to visit the raptor banding station or get involve with other Pronatura projects for conservation if interested, enjoy a different culture, plus enjoy archaeological sites nearby such the Quiahuiztlan ruins or the Cempoala ruins from where indigenous groups where able to witness the raptor migration in unknown proportions.
Requirements and activities:
Identify raptors by shape and a distance (only counters)
10 observational hours a day (Day off is every 3 days)
Enter data digitally onsite
Collect weather data hourly
Identify and count migrating raptors
Interaction with visitors
Keep counting equipment in good conditions
Have ready all counting equipment before start time
Being responsible hotel plaza
Have good attitude
Bilingual if possible (Español-English)
To apply as a COUNTER
Raptor Counters must have 3 years of experience estimating migrating raptors, but people with good counting skills e.g. counting waterfowl are welcome to apply if are good with raptor ID. Official counters will be on charge of reviewing data entered by the assistants at the end of the day (5 minutes), they are on charge of counting all the countable migratory species in each station and to talk with visitors when needed. Compensation $8500MXpesos up to $10500MXpesos according to experience.
To apply as ASSISTANT:
Assistants will be on charge of enter the information provided by the counters, this is writing any species with the numbers the COUNTERS are yelling, and each hour they need to record weather information (Wind speed/direction, temperature, cloud type/cover, visibility, etc) assistants will require less raptor ID skills but we will select according to experience and proven birding skills such eBird. This is a position that allows learning from experienced counters and birders how to identify birds in flight particularly raptors. Compensation $7500MXpesos.
Non Mexican residents will need a valid Work Visa.
