      Last Date to Apply: 01/15/2020
      Open Until Filled: Yes

    Position:  Station Coordinator

Location:  Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory, Prince Edward ON

    Duration:  8 Apr – 7 June 2020 and 8 Aug – 30 Nov 2020 (banding operations Apr 15-May 31, Aug 15-Oct 31)

Job Type:  Seasonal (24.5 weeks including end of season data management)

    Application Deadline:  Jan 15, 2020

    Site Description:
Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory (PEPtBO) is located on Lake Ontario, 225 km east of Toronto in the Prince Edward Point National Wildlife Area (NWA) and the Prince Edward County South Shore Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA).  Run by a volunteer Board of Directors, this busy station bands 10,000+ birds of 100+ species each year.  More than 260 species and forms have been observed at the observatory over the last ten years.   The NWA is open to the public and the Observatory has hundreds of visitors a year.   PEPtBO adheres to the NABC guidelines for banding and follows a standardized protocol that operates 19 passerine nets 7 days a week.  Fall banding also includes seven hawk nets, Bobolink nets (3 weeks) and Northern Saw-whet Owl nets (October).

    Qualifications:
Applicants for the Station Coordinator (SC) position should possess banding qualifications for passerines and raptors/owls.  Preference will be given to applicants with NABC certification as a trainer. Considerable knowledge of and experience with northeastern bird identification, ageing and sexing is required as is an ability to quickly and accurately take measurements.  Applicants must have experience with setting up, using and maintaining mist nets and implementing a migration monitoring protocol.   Applicants must maintain high scientific and ethical standards.  Equally important as managing a migration monitoring station is the ability to train and foster a positive and inclusive team (made up of Assistant Bander, Intern(s) and volunteers), and to provide effective public education. Because the location is remote, applicants will need to provide their own transportation.  An ability to communicate with visitors in French would be an asset.

    Compensation:

Accommodation and food are supplied to banding staff on site.  Pay will be commensurate with experience. Applicants should be able to be employed in Canada.

    To Apply:
Please send a resume that includes banding permit details, banding experience, qualifications and contact information for three references, to Peter Fuller (info@peptbo.ca) before Jan 15, 2020.
