    • Employer: Massachusetts Division of Fisheries & Wildlife
      Location: Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts
      Country: United States
Last Date to Apply: No value
      Open Until Filled: Yes

A PREDATOR CONTROL TECHNICIAN is needed to restore rare and endangered terns to Bird, Ram, and Penikese Islands in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts. These islands support nearly half the North American population of the federally endangered Roseate Tern; active management to protect the population is critical to recovery. Activities include censusing of Common, Roseate, and Arctic Terns; monitoring tern growth and productivity; trapping and banding adults and chicks; participating in studies of terns carrying PIT-tags; reading bands on adults through spotting scopes; monitoring productivity of American Oystercatchers; discouragement, control, censusing, and monitoring productivity of Herring and Great Black-backed Gulls; habitat management; maintaining field notebooks; and data management.

The Predator Control Technician will work at all three sites. When working at Bird/Ram islands, technician will make day trips in a small boat with the rest of the crew and will be based at a mainland crew house. At Penikese Island, technician will help set up and live in a field camp on the island and work on an irregular 5-7 day/week schedule depending on weather conditions and on an irregular boat schedule to the island. Applicants must be able to carry heavy field equipment a distance of ½ mile for camp set-up and break-down, and be comfortable living in a remote island setting with limited facilities for up to 2-3 weeks at a time. Mainland crew house available for days off. While the technician will spend time at any site at which predator control is needed, it is anticipated that a majority of time will be spent on Penikese. Work will average 6 days/week, schedule will be irregular, and work on weekends and holidays is expected.

The Predator Control Technician must be a Massachusetts resident with a valid Firearms Identification Card or License to Carry at the time of application and throughout the duration of employment. Must have: expertise with hunting and/or predator control utilizing firearms; a good working knowledge of Massachusetts firearm laws; and willingness to work regularly or mostly at night. Incumbent must be an exceptionally responsible individual. Candidates should be self-motivated, organized, mature, have a strong work ethic, pay close attention to detail, be able to live and work cooperatively with others, be able to maintain a positive attitude under a heavy workload, and be in good physical condition. Willingness to use own vehicle and experience with outboard motorboats are helpful.
