The Kansas Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit at Kansas State University is seeking multiple seasonal research technicians to aid a research project examining the vegetative and population response of lesser prairie-chickens to wildfire. Eligible applicants will be available for work beginning February 25th, 2019 to ~May 26th 2019, with the possibility for extension. Applicants should be prepared to work irregular hours (pre-dawn), with long work days in extreme conditions (hot, dry, windy, or cold). Possible encounters with venomous snakes should be expected. Applicants should be comfortable working on private lands, have a valid driver’s license, and have experience driving off road.
Housing (shared) will be provided at a remote site in western Kansas where AT&T cell service is mostly nonexistent. Applicants should be comfortable living in close quarters with other technicians and graduate students.
Primary Duties: capturing Lesser Prairie-Chickens via funnel traps and dropnets, marking individuals with GPS transmitters, vegetation surveys, finding and monitoring nests, working closely with collaborating researchers, as well as data organization and management. Monitoring of broods in the summer is possible if the positions are extended.

Seasonal Technician: Applicants must be working towards or have a bachelor’s degree in wildlife science, biology, or related field. Preference will be given to applicants that have demonstrated experience in field research, handling wildlife, grassland plant ID, and habitat surveys related to avian ecology. Successful applicants will have a positive work attitude and strong work ethic.
Crew Leader: Must meet requirements above and have either experience in leadership position or references that vouch for leadership potential. Desired leadership qualities include an ability to work as part of a team, communicate tasks to others, and motivate colleagues while in the field.
