We are seeking a highly motivated crew lead and two technicians to conduct point counts for forest and grassland birds throughout National Parks in the greater Washington D.C. area beginning early May and running through July 2022. This work is part of the National Park Service National Capital Region’s Inventory and Monitoring Program studying long-term trends in bird populations. Work includes bird surveys, hiking, data entry and QA/QC. Survey locations cover a variety of habitats and species. Crew members will also assist in Northern Bobwhite surveys in Manassas National Battlefield Park. The crew lead will also be responsible for planning weekly survey schedules and contacting park managers.

Housing is located in Martinsburg, WV but surveys will be conducted throughout D.C., MD, VA and WV. A field vehicle will be provided but occasional use of a personal vehicle may be needed with mileage reimbursement.

Qualified applicants need to know eastern birds by sight and sound, be able to navigate using GPS and maps, be comfortable hiking alone and be physically fit. You should be ready to hike through tough terrain and deal with adverse conditions including biting insects. Applicants should be comfortable driving long distances and in a city environment. Work will begin at early hours and follow an unpredictable schedule. You must work well independently and have a good attitude sharing housing with others.

Applicants with previous point count experience preferred. A valid driver’s license is required. Salary range is $2300-2800 per month depending on position and experience. Housing and vehicle will be provided (some camping may be required). Successful applicants must follow University of Delaware COVID-19 protocols while employed by the university.
