We are seeking a highly motivated research technician to conduct point counts for forest and grassland birds in National Parks in MD, DC, VA and WV from mid-May through July 2022. This work is part of the National Park Service National Capital Region’s Inventory and Monitoring Program studying long-term trends in bird populations. Work includes bird surveys, hiking, data entry and QA/QC. Survey locations cover a variety of habitats and species.
Qualified applicants need to know eastern birds by sight and sound, be able to navigate using GPS and maps, be comfortable hiking alone and be physically fit. You should be ready to hike through tough terrain and deal with adverse conditions including biting insects. Work will begin at early hours and follow an unpredictable schedule. Technicians must work well independently and have a good attitude sharing housing with others. Applicants should also be comfortable driving in urban areas.
Applicants with previous point count experience preferred and a valid driver’s license is required. Salary starts at $15/hr. Housing and vehicle will be provided (some camping may be required).
