The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Great Basin Bird Observatory (GBBO), is seeking one Field Technician to assist with avian biological surveys and research primarily focused on Pinyon Jays, in the Eastern Sierra region of California and Nevada. Primary duties include walking and road-based surveys, focal observations, nest searching, and habitat/vegetation sampling for Pinyon Jays. There may be opportunities to assist with other projects including Pinyon Jay trapping and transmitter deployment, prepping and maintaining trapping stations, and Greater Sage-Grouse research activities.
Work hours will be irregular and include early mornings, evenings, and possibly weekends. Temperature extremes will range from below freezing possibly up to 100 degrees F. The primary study area is around 7000 feet elevation. Inclement weather and extreme wind are possible throughout the season. This temporary full-time appointment starts in late February or early March and will continue through the middle of July or August, with the potential for extension depending on funding and performance. Exact dates may be somewhat negotiable. Technicians will earn $15-17/hr, depending on experience. Field housing and work transportation will be provided, although occasional camping may be required.
A B.S. degree in a natural resource field is required, and all applicants must possess a valid U.S. driver’s license. Successful applicants must possess the ability to hike long distances (up to 10 km/day) off trail and over rough terrain. The ability to take direction and work independently, a strong work ethic, a willingness to learn, a desire to gain experience while maintaining an enthusiastic attitude, and good communication skills are essential. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated experience in wildlife field research. Preferred qualifications include previous experience with avian nest searching or nest monitoring, excellent bird identification skills by sight and by sound, experience handling wild birds, and experience with field-based mobile mapping and GIS applications.
