Project: Monitoring California Spotted Owl and Barred Owls in the Sierra Nevada, California

Description: The recent expansion of barred owls into the western US has had dramatic negative consequences for the northern spotted owl, and barred owls are now increasing in the Sierra Nevada, the core range of the California spotted owl. UW-Madison, in partnership with the US Forest Service and US Fish and Wildlife, is leading a project designed to 1) evaluate spotted and barred owl distribution and density in the northern Sierra Nevada (Lassen and Plumas National Forests) and 2) determine patterns of barred owl and spotted owl co-occurrence. The results will guide barred owl management and spotted owl conservation throughout the Sierra Nevada.

We will use autonomous recording units (ARUs, aka song-meters) to detect owls. Eight technicians will be hired whose primary duties will be to 1) deploy and relocate ARUs on a weekly basis, 2) to process acoustic data, and 3) carefully enter and proof acoustic data.

Season runs from early May until mid-August. Compensation is $2000-$2200/month.  Work week will generally be 4 days, with occasional 5 day weeks as needed.  Housing will be provided, but crews should expect to spend some time camping most weeks.
