    Position Description: Two apprentices needed to assist in the Northern Spotted Owl monitoring project at Point Blue Conservation Science, in Marin County, California. We have been studying this dense population of Northern Spotted Owls since 1997. Fieldwork includes determining site occupancy, nesting status, and reproductive success. The apprentices will participate in field work and data collection approximately 4 days per week, plus one office day per week for data entry (rarely, we will work 6 days in a week). The field schedule is variable and involves working at night and during the day. The apprentices will become proficient in field protocols for monitoring Spotted Owls, orienteering, and identification of owls and other local bird species by sight and sound. The apprentices will also become familiar with current conservation topics, including climate-smart principles, via paper discussions and presentations. Use of personal vehicles for field work will be reimbursed at the current federal mileage rate. The apprentices are needed from March 6 to July 7, for the full duration of the season. Local housing is provided and will be shared by 3 members of the Spotted Owl crew; due to the covid-19 pandemic, crew members will be expected to follow CDC, County of Marin, and Point Blue guidelines to protect themselves and members of their crew and community.

    Compensation: The apprentices will be paid $18 per hour, plus overtime, minus a deductible for housing (determined by the Dept. of Labor and the Internal Revenue Service: current rate is $58.22 per week).

    Qualifications: Desired applicants will have a strong interest in birds and conservation, and the desire to spend long hours in the field and office. Applicants should have the ability to traverse long distances through steep and uneven terrain; a typical field day involves hiking several miles with a mix of on-trail, and off-trail hiking through steep forested habitat with some poison oak. Participants must be able to work alone (after a training period), as well as with a partner. Preference may be given to applicants with previous experience with field work, scientific data collection, and/or working with birds. Applicants will need a valid driver's license, a personal vehicle, and current proof of insurance; Point Blue will conduct a motor vehicle report for insurance purposes, after hiring.
