Description:
Two natural resource professionals are needed to assist with the City of Mentor’s Natural Resource Division with a fall migratory bird banding station. The qualified candidates will have experience in the identification, banding, ageing, sexing, and handling of passerines. The candidates will also have experience in the set-up of mist-nets and show proficiency in the safe extraction of birds. The banders will be taking part in the cutting of net lanes, vegetation, and trails via hand and power tools. We are seeking individuals who are open to changes and can deal with unexpected situations calmly. The candidates will need to assist less experienced banders and assist in training volunteers.
The preferred candidates will continue employment into the winter. Work duties shift to invasive species management and white-tailed deer management.
Minimum Qualifications:
Completed degree or continuing education in wildlife biology, wildlife management, ecology, or similar field
Proven ability to safely extract passerines from mist nets (~500 birds extracted)
Experience handling, banding, and taking biological measurements on passerines such as wing chord, tarsus, weight
Must be physically fit to walk up to 7 miles and willing to work in all weather conditions.
Must be able to lift 40Ibs
Willingness to operate chainsaws and/or use hand tools such as loppers and handsaws
Proven as a cohesive member of a team
Preferred Qualifications:
Skills in ageing passerines and understanding of passerine molt strategies
Ability to read and understand “Pyle”
Experience educating the public on migratory bird species and/or invasive plant species
