Description:
Natural resource professionals are needed to assist with the City of Mentor’s Natural Resources Division with a migratory bird banding station. The qualified candidate will have experience in the identification, banding, ageing, sexing, and handling of passerines. The candidate will also have experience in the set-up of mist-nets and show proficiency in the safe extraction of bird species. The bander will also be taking part in the cutting of net lanes, vegetation, and trails via hand and power tools. This spring season will be fluid as changes in net locations and methods are expected. We are seeking someone who is open to changes and can deal with unexpected situations calmly. The candidate will need to assist less experienced banders and assist in training several volunteers.
This position will run through the summer where the focus will shift towards invasive species management, public education, and natural resources programming until Fall Banding commences.
Minimum Qualifications:
Completed degree or continuing education in wildlife biology, wildlife management, ecology, or similar field
Proven ability to safely extract passerines from mist nets (~700 birds extracted)
Experience handling, banding, and taking biological measurements on passerines such as wing chord, tarsus, weight
Must be physically fit and willing to work in all weather conditions.
Willingness to operate chainsaws and/or use hand tools such as loppers
Proven as a cohesive member of a team
Preferred Qualifications:
Skills in ageing passerines and understanding of different molt strategies
Ability to read and understand “Pyle”
Experience educating the public on migratory bird species and/or invasive plant species
