  • Migration Songbird Bander

    • Employer: Massachusetts Audubon Society
      Location: Cape Cod, MA
      Country: United States
      Last Date to Apply: 03/01/2020
      Open Until Filled: Yes

The Massachusetts Audubon Society is a non-profit conservation and research organization conducting a broad range of studies across the state and beyond. We are looking for an experienced bander to help conduct spring migration banding operations at Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary on wildlife rich Cape Cod.  Duration: bander will assist in daily operation of a passerine migration monitoring station (safely and efficiently extract songbirds as well as banding and collecting data on the majority of captures) from April 14 - May 31 2019. We also run two stations in the fall from September 1 – November 15, we hope the technician hired in the spring will be willing to return in the fall to be a crew leader at one of the stations, but this is not required. You can find out more about the stations at monomoybirds.com. Requirements: A qualified candidate is expected to have a strong interest in avian biology and experience with identification, ageing, sexing, banding, and extraction of eastern North American passerines is a requirement. Public and educational demonstrations are a key part of our project; we will encounter visitors in organized groups led by naturalists and individual walking the trails in this open property throughout the season. This is an excellent opportunity to develop additional skills handling North American songbirds, while gaining experience working with the public. There will be additional opportunities to participate other ongoing projects on the sanctuary (breeding songbird monitoring, terrapin trapping/tagging, coastal shorebird monitoring, etc. Compensation: $12 per hour, 40 hours per week, modern housing is provided on-site at the cost of 35$ per week. To Apply: send a cover letter highlighting banding experience, resume and three references to james.jundaATgmail.com
