Mountainview Biological Consulting (MVBC) is seeking one (1) Lead Bander to continue our banding efforts for the Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship (MAPS) program in Sky Park located in Sky Forest, California and Metcalf Meadow located in Big Bear Lake, California. The position extends from May 15 to August 8, 2021.
Site Description: Sky Park and Metcalf Meadow are located in the San Bernardino Mountains. Sky Park is at approximately 5,700 feet of elevation and Metcalf Meadow is at approximately 7,200 feet of elevation. Metcalf Meadow was the original MAPS banding station that operated from 1991 to 1996. MVBC is excited to have this station back in operation! The habitat here consist of primarily a meadow habitat surrounded by mixed conifer forest. The habitat of Sky Park primarily consists of mixed conifer forest with meadows and small riparian patches. This will be the third year this MAPS station will be in operation and has been the only banding station located in the San Bernardino Mountains since 1996!
Duties: The Lead Bander will be responsible for continuing our passerine banding operation. The Lead Bander's day (along with crew) runs from dawn to about noon for nine (9) operating days (typically Saturdays or Sundays) at each location. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to identifying and extracting passerines from mist nets, banding, net set-up and maintenance, maintaining accurate observation and banding books, submitting data, general on-site maintenance, and crew training/oversight as needed. The Lead Bander will have an experienced Assistant Bander, an intern, and at least one volunteer.
Qualifications: A Master Bander permit, or Sub-permit, for passerines and near-passerines is required. Successful applicants are encouraged to have previous experience with the MAPS protocol, be proficient at Western bird identification by sight and sound, and MUST have advanced skills in mist-netting, bird banding, and aging and sexing of birds in the hand. Applicants will be expected to use Peter Pyle's Identification Guide to North American Birds (Part I) to identify plumages and molts of birds. Demonstrated leadership skills, attention to detail, good physical condition, a tolerance of long days that begin before dawn are required.
Compensation: Pay will be commensurate with experience.
