Hawaii Wildlife Center is looking for interns for our Manu O Ku (White Tern) Soft-release program on Oahu
Interns will need to spend 2 weeks on the Big Island training at the Hawaii Wildlife Center, and then will spend the next 6 week on Oahu after training. Our White Tern soft release program is hosted at the Honolulu Zoo and is a joint partnership between the Honolulu Zoological Society & Hawaii Wildlife Center. Interns will provide daily care, feeding, as well as health and behavior monitoring of orphaned chicks and continue to care for chicks until they are independently hunting on their own and not needing assisted feeding. In addition to working directly with Manu O Ku chicks - you will also be available for help with many different wildlife conservation efforts including:
* White Tern nesting surveys and banding of appropriate sized chicks
* Pueo (Hawaiian Short eared Owl) field research and data collection
* Taxidermy/specimen inventory and collection data at the Bishop Museum
* Seasonally (during fall) help with downed seabird response and evaluation during Wedge-tailed Shearwater fallout/fledgling season
* Other wildlife conservation efforts like field research, data collection and hands-on work
Housing will be provided on Oahu - qualified candidates must pay for travel to Big Island for training and then also to Oahu after training at the HWC. Discounted housing may be available on Big Island but is not guaranteed.
There is no stipend or food provided, bu interns will graduate with a certificate and letter of recommendation describing the work performed.
Housing is provided on Oahu within walking distance from HNL Zoo.
