  • Lead Avian Field Technician

    Seasonal avian field technician(s) needed to lead field work for a study on the effects of forestry on birds at Rio Bravo Conservation and Management Area (RBCMA) in northwestern Belize.  The field season will be from approximately November 2024 through April 2025.  A single person is preferred for the season, but shorter-term commitments (2-3 months) may be possible.

    The lead field technician will work with an assistant field technician and other staff at Programme for Belize (PfB), who manages RBCMA, to conduct a constant-effort mist-netting study, to track wood thrush using radio telemetry, and to collect vegetation data.

    Room and board are included at Hill Bank Field Station.  A stipend and/or airfare will also be available.

    The successful applicant(s) will be skilled in most, if not all, of the following:

    ·       Bird banding, including the use of mist nets, aging and sexing, and taking morphological measurements.

    ·       Radio telemetry and the attachment of nanotags

    ·       Data collection and management

    ·       Able to work early mornings and long hours

    ·       Able to work in rough terrain, off trail, and in hot conditions

    ·       Attention to detail

    ·       Managing and maintain equipment for efficient field operations

    ·       Able to live with a community in rustic conditions

    ·       Able to work independently or as a team

    ·       Able to identify the forest birds of Belize

    ·       Tree identification of northwestern Belize
