  • Immediate hire, FL Everglades Wetland Field Technician

    Gina Kent
    • Employer: Avian Research and Conservation Institute
      Location: South Florida Everglades
      Country: United States
      Last Date to Apply: 06/30/2022
      Open Until Filled: Yes

Field Technicians (2) needed to work with the Avian Research and Conservation Institute on an Apple Snail field study in the Everglades

What: long term study of Apple Snail responses to changes in hydrology and water quality, in support of management planning and recovery for the federally endangered Snail Kite in the species historic breeding range between Tamiami Trail (US Hwy 41) and Alligator Alley (Interstate 75).

Excellent opportunity to gain field experience working from an airboat, learning and applying aquatic sampling techniques, and discovering and identifying the spectacular flora and fauna of the Everglades.

Tasks: Driving/trailering an airboat, navigating by GPS to random sites, throw-trap sampling of apple snails, aquatic vegetation, and invertebrates; measuring depth, water chemistry; and conducting systematic snail egg cluster counts.

In addition, technicians also may have opportunities to work with ARCI on the nonprofit’s ongoing conservation-related field studies of Swallow-tailed Kites, Snail Kites, Reddish Egrets, Southeastern American Kestrels and Burrowing Owls as time allows.

Who: Seeking enthusiastic field assistants to get their “feet wet” in the beautiful Everglades. Ability to work long days in the sun, get in and out of an airboat, and walk in water up to 4 feet deep hauling 30-40 pounds of gear short distances. Tolerant of occasional close encounters with alligators, snakes, and (of course) mosquitoes.

Preferred applicants would have prior boating/trailering/airboat experience.

In addition, all candidates will have:

    • Proficiency using a hand-held GPS receiver and compass to navigate.

    • The willingness to spend long hours in the field and to work odd hours, including starting work early to avoid afternoon extreme heat and thunderstorms.

    • Experience in adhering to scientific field protocols and accurately recording data.

    • Basic computer skills: e.g., Microsoft suite (Word, Excel), Garmin Basecamp software, managing digital data forms and Cloud files, and general computer fluency.

    • A valid state-issued driver’s license with a clean driving record.

When: As soon as possible (depending on water conditions for sampling) and continuing until the work is complete. Flexibility (ours and yours) in work schedule.

Compensation: Competitive hourly wage depending on experience.

Lodging: ARCI will provide comfortable, shared housing within a reasonable distance of study area access points (having a personal vehicle for off-work hours is recommended).

To apply: Send a brief cover letter and resume with contact emails/phone numbers for at least two references to:
