    HawkWatch International is seeking two, full-time, volunteer interns to assist with multiple facets of its American Kestrel Studies in Northern Utah.  The internship will run from 1 March through July and comes with a $600/week stipend.  Current undergraduate students or recent graduates from a biology, wildlife, or natural resources program qualify for this internship.  Interns will work 5-6 days per week, with some weekend work.

    Specific learning/training opportunities include:

    • Assisting HWI staff and citizen scientists with nest box maintenance and /or installation
    • Assisting with monitoring of American Kestrel, Western Screech-owl, Northern Saw-whet Owl, and other cavity-nesting species nests.
    • Using high-end spotting scope during efforts to resight colorbanded American Kestrels as part of a long-term movement and survival study
    • Assisting with capture and banding (including colorbanding) of nestling and adult Kestrels, using both hand-capture and bal chatri traps.
    • Assisting with collection of feather and blood, samples as part of genetic and contaminant studies
    • Assisting with installation, maintenance, and data collection from game-cameras positioned to document food deliveries
    • Assisting with deployment and recovery of tracking devices
    • Exposure to research and outreach efforts at conservation non-profit organization.
    • Exposure to working with and coordination of a large group of citizen scientists
    • Data entry, quality assurance/control, equipment care, and curation of field samples
