Job Summary:
Seeking up three (3) technicians to collect data on a few grassland bird species across several areas within the state of Indiana. Target species are Northern Bobwhite, Ring-necked Pheasant, Loggerhead Shrike, Henslow’s Sparrow, Field Sparrow, Indigo Bunting, Dickcissel, and Grasshopper Sparrow. The primary duties will be to perform point count surveys, operate and manage autonomous recording devices (ARUs), and coordinate with landowners, state and federal agency personnel, and university staff to gain access to participating landowner properties. This position requires travel throughout the sampling time frame. Successful applicants may assist with data management and manipulation. Individuals will have the opportunity to learn about designing large-scale wildlife research studies and private land conservation programs in the US.

3. Communicating with landowners, agency staff, and university staff
Willingness to travel extensively is required. Must be willing to perform field work in remote locations at early hours. Experience with point counts, bobwhite covey calls, or other forms of distance sampling is a plus. Must show attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
Education and Experience:
Some classes in Ecology, Biology, Wildlife, or similar field.
Preferred Qualifications:
1. A completed associate degree or higher.
2. A positive attitude and a good work ethic
3. A strong interest in game bird management and ecology, wildlife, or related field
4. Experience with field work is preferred
5. Comfort with navigating off-road locations, especially in darkness or low light.
6. Experience with point counts, covey calls, or distance sampling is a plus.
7. Ability to communicate and interact with a diverse group of people (e.g., landowners, agency personnel)
8. Organization skills, attention to detail
9. A valid driver’s license and a good driving record
Physical Demand:
Driving long distances, early morning field work, carrying up to 25 lbs of field equipment.
