    Location:  Saginaw Bay region, Michigan.

    Salary Range:  $15-16 per hour, commensurate with training and experience.  Travel expenses will be reimbursed.

    Term of Employment:  Approximately early-May – mid July 2020; possible extension through August pending available funding.

    Minimum Qualifications:  ≥ 2 years study toward B.S. in wildlife biology, zoology, natural resource management, or closely related field.

    Description of Position and Duties: The field technician will be responsible for conducting field work in support of a study investigating marsh bird and plant response to invasive Phragmites australis expansion and management in Saginaw Bay, Michigan coastal wetlands. Working closely with the principal investigator, the technician will plan field activities, conduct surveys, and ensure accurate data collection. Duties will include evaluating potential sites, conducting marsh bird surveys, sampling vegetation and wetland characteristics, cleaning and maintaining equipment, and compiling and entering data into spreadsheets. Additional assistance with related wetland research and/or rare animal surveys (e.g., rare butterfly surveys) in other parts of the State may be required. Field sampling will regularly require long hours and early morning work schedules under adverse working conditions (e.g., hot and humid weather, long and difficult hikes in waders, and biting insects). Work over some holidays and/or weekends, travel to study sites throughout Michigan, and use of personal vehicle will be required (mileage reimbursed at standard rate). Desired qualifications include the following: familiarity with Michigan and/or Midwestern ecosystems; experience conducting bird surveys; ability to identify common Michigan plant species; and capability to navigate via map, compass, and GPS. Applicants must have valid driver’s license and should be comfortable using watercraft (small boats, kayaks) and working alone in remote locations. A willingness to learn and a good sense of humor are essential and applicants should be able to work both independently and as part of a team.
