NWES is currently looking to hire a qualified and experienced Avian Biologist to join NWES’ team on a contract basis.  The primary focus of the position will be to complete breeding bird surveys, as well as other avian surveys (migration, behavior, etc.) at a variety of project sites across the Lake Nipigon Ecoregion, Ontario in support of the Canadian Wildlife Services and Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas (OBBA).  The biologist will also assist with other field and office work as assigned.  There may be other opportunities throughout the contract to lead and/or assist with other survey types if the applicant demonstrates skills in other areas of biology.

It is anticipated that during the peak breeding bird season (approximately June 1 – July 10th) the Avian Biologist will carry out breeding bird surveys in northern Ontario.

It is also anticipated that the successful applicant will be based out of the Thunder Bay area.  Due to Covid-19 all employees are working from home, with travel to project sites for essential field work.  NWES will provide IT support for working at home. This is a contract position with a preferred start date of May 25, 2021 and end date of August, 2021.  Approved project-related expenses will be covered.

A valid driver’s license and insurance eligibility is an asset. The successful applicant will have skills and experience in the following areas:

    ·         Extensive experience in completing a variety of avian surveys (e.g., breeding bird surveys, area searches, point counts, documenting breeding bird evidence, etc.). Other aspects of avian field survey experience are an asset.

    ·         Ability to identify (visually and auditorily) the majority of the regularly occurring breeding birds of northern Ontario (with a strong emphasis on songbirds).

    ·         Experience or knowledge of the Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas and the protocols, purpose, and methodologies.

    ·         Experience completing other terrestrial field surveys, such as ecological land classification, OWES wetland surveys, mammals, etc.

    ·         Demonstrated experience and comfort travelling and working in the field, including in remote locations and camping.

    ·         A desire and demonstrated ability to work independently.

    ·         Experience in report writing, data entry and analysis.

    ·         Familiarity with Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel.

    ·         Demonstrated accuracy and attention to detail in all aspects of work.

    ·         Willingness to work long hours under variable field conditions as well as work on weekends and/or statutory holidays.

    ·         Physical fitness, as field work for this position will be highly physical.

    ·         Up to date Standard First Aid and CPR-C certification is an asset.

Qualities such as a good work ethic, dependability, and a positive attitude are essential for this position.

    Position Type: Contract

Duration: May 25 – August, 2021 with the possibility of extension.

Location: Thunder Bay with travel to field sites throughout northern Ontario.

Key Requirements: A valid driver’s license, and ability to work remotely

Salary: $18 - $20 per hour [commensurate on training and experience]

Submit Cover Letter/Resume to: info@northwindsenv.ca   Position: Avian Biologist  Attn: James Barber

Interested applicants should apply no later than May 1, 2021. Applications received after the May deadline will still be accepted and may be considered if a suitable candidate is not found during the first round of interviews, or if additional positions are required.  All applications are greatly appreciated; however, only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.

The current COVID-19 outbreak and provincial restrictions have changed the way NWES conducts its work. As a result, this field biologist position will be on an “as-needed” basis. The NWES office is functioning on a limited basis and all employees are encouraged to work from home at this time. NWES has developed company wide and project-specific health and safety measures, according to government recommendations, in order to protect staff and the community during the COVID-19 pandemic, while allowing us to carry out essential work.
