    Conservian Bahamas May 2020 Live-aboard Schooner Expedition:

    Shorebird Habitat Restoration

    Field Assistant Intern- Bahamas Live-Aboard

    Conservian is seeking a few enthusiastic volunteer field assistant interns for our Bahamas habitat restoration work in May 2020 aboard a 75ft research schooner in the Bahamas. The focus of the work is assisting with shorebird surveys and controlling invasive Australian pine. Assistant will work cooperatively with Conservian project director to lead and conduct fieldwork and help supervise volunteers. Focal species include Wilson’s Plovers, American Oystercatchers, Least Terns and other colonial nesting species. Assistants will record data on breeding pairs, habitat assessment, and human-created disturbance. Assistants will complete various data forms, perform data entry, and assist director with daily planning/prep duties onboard the research schooner.

    This is an excellent opportunity to gain intense field experience and a positive recommendation for your resume during a single week in the field. For qualifying applicants Conservian may provide partial assistance with schooner fare.

    All trips include bunk, onboard meals, water, & ground transportation associated with project.  A valid passport is required. Airfare & insurance are not included. Trip cost is $1750 per person/week. Please go to Coastalbird.org for more info.

    Please note our ports of call were not impacted by Hurricane Dorian. All islands on the 2020 itinerary were unaffected.

    Week 1: May 3-10 - Ambergris Cay, Joulter Cays & S. Andros (Nassau Int Apt)

    Week 2: May 10-17 - Exumas & Great Exuma (Nassau Int Apt/Exuma Int. Apt)

    Week 3: May 17-24 - Cat Island, Little San Salvador, Eleuthera (Exuma Int. Apt/Nassau Int. Apt) Each week includes 7 nights aboard the schooner

    Project Summary

    Conservian and partners will continue on-the-ground protective and restorative measures to limit human-caused disturbance, and control invasive Australian pine at key Piping Plover, shorebird, and seabird sites in the Bahamas. Field assistant and volunteers will participate in collecting new data on shorebirds and seabirds of the Bahamas. Selected sites include globally and locally Important Bird Areas and national parks of the Bahamas, such as Joulter Cays IBA, Ambergris Cay IBA, Andros, the Exumas, Great Exuma, and Eleuthera.

    Qualifications: Shorebird ID skills and leadership abilities are preferred for this position. Applicants must be responsible, adventurous, in good physical condition, enjoy working in teams, and capable of walking several miles during warm weather in the Caribbean. Applicants must be comfortable living communally onboard a schooner and riding in small boats to access project sites.
