Monomoy Bird Observatory is a non-profit conservation and research organization conducting bird research at two banding stations on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. We are looking for (2) experienced banders to conduct fall migration banding operations at MassAudubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary and Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge. Requirements: A qualified candidate is expected to have a strong interest in avian biology and knowledge of Eastern North American landbirds. Experience extracting passerines from mist-nets is required. Some experience with ageing, sexing and taking morphometric measurements in preferred. Additional experience identifying eastern shorebirds, ducks and seabirds is preferred, but training will be provided. After a brief training period both banders will be expected to work as a team without direct supervision, providing a great chance for experience working independently. Banders will alternate between each of the station every 2-3 weeks with each of the two stations operating differently: at Wellfleet Bay candidates must be prepared to interact with the public while conducting banding operations; public and educational demonstrations are a key part of our project and we will encounter visitors in organized groups led by naturalists and individual walking the trails in this open property. While at working on Monomoy banders will live in a remote location (a historic lighthouse, accessible only by boat) with limited amenities, but an abundance of avian life and great possibilities for rare birds. For more information of the banding locations and project please visit our website monomoybirds.org.  Compensation: At Wellfleet Bay, for 5 weeks of the season, $12 per hour, 40 hours per week, modern housing is provided at 35$ per week. While on Monomoy, 5 weeks of the season, banders will receive a stipend to pay for food and housing is provided free of cost. Duration: August 27 – November 15. Work Schedule: Daily, from dawn until six hours after dawn, days off are weather dependent. To Apply: Send a resume, three references and a cover letter highlighting banding and extraction experience to james.junda AT gmail.com
