  • Environmental Education Naturalist/Seabird Technician on Petit Manan Island

    Guest Michael Langlois
    • Employer: USFWS, Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge
      Location: Coastal Maine
      Country: United States
      Last Date to Apply: 02/10/2023
      Open Until Filled: No

Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge is seeking to hire a seasonal Environmental Education naturalist to implement our public outreach efforts on a managed seabird colony.  Petit Manan Island is a diverse seabird nesting colony located in Steuben, Maine.  The island is visited daily by multiple tourboats that come to view the nesting seabirds (Arctic and common terns, Atlantic puffin, razorbills, common eider, laughing gulls, black guillemot, and Leach’s storm-petrel).  Annual visitation is reported to surpass 35,000 visitors.  We would like to develop an interpretive program where the naturalist directly communicates with the passengers on the various tourboats to explain the mission of the US Fish and Wildlife Service, our management efforts on the island, and highlights our conservation efforts to restore the seabirds.

The naturalist/technician would live on the island with a crew of four seabird technicians for the entire 12 week period and split their time implementing public outreach and seabird monitoring and management activities with the entire crew. Housing provided (lighthouse keepers’ house), with propane refrigerators, solar electricity for lights and computers, but no running water.  Candidates must be at least 18 years old, a US Citizen, have a Social Security Number, and a US Bank account for electronic payments.

    Qualifications:

We are looking for someone who is self-motivated and eager to share our conservation success story. You will have the opportunity to be creative in designing this outreach program and are encouraged to use multiple techniques (i.e. direct contact, videos, social media, or printed material). Applicants must have a solid work ethic, function well independently, yet be comfortable working/living with other technicians on a remote island with limited amenities.  They should be comfortable talking to visitors and addressing their questions.  Applicants will work outdoors in variable weather conditions, and need to be able to hike over rugged, uneven terrain.  Prior experience with implementing an environmental education program or bird identification would be helpful, but not required.

    Dates: May 22 - August 11, 2023 (one position)

Salary:  Island housing provided + $552 per week

    Application Instructions:

Interested applicants should email the following materials to michael_langlois@fws.gov: cover letter, resume and contact information for three references (name, phone number and email address). Please have all materials in one worddoc. or pdf. format titled (first name_last name_outreach_application). Consideration of candidates will begin on January 5th and continue until all positions are filled.  For more information, call Maine Coastal Islands NWR at 207-594-0600 ext. 5113 or check out our website at https://www.fws.gov/refuge/maine_coastal_islands/ and the island research video and blog describing the experiences of previous island researchers at our Friends of Maine Coastal Islands (FOMCI) website https://mainecoastislands.org/island-technicians/.
