    The intern serves an an endangered species technician at Carolina Sandhills NWR in support of the biologist during red-cockaded woodpecker nesting season.  Duties include monitoring red-cockaded woodpecker nests; conducting behavioral observations on adult and juvenile red-cockaded woodpeckers; reading color bands from a distance; using Field Maps to record bird and tree locations; assessing condition, painting, and tagging cavity trees; maintaining vehicles and equipment in working order; and inputting data collected during the season.  Other duties may include acoustic bat surveys, bobwhite whistling surveys, and assisting with environmental education events, such as the Kids Fishing Derby and school groups.  

    This position includes on-site housing, $1,100 one-time round trip Travel Allowance, $300/week living allowance, and is eligible for an AmeriCorps Education Award (dependent on availability at the time of candidate selection.
