Colorado Pinyon Jay Tech-Crew Lead (1)

Description:

Assist one graduate student to capture, GPS tag, and monitor Pinyon Jay populations through target capturing, count and behavioral surveys, habitat data collection, remote telemetry data collection, and deployment of audio recording units (ARU). Expected duties also include, but not limited to assist with capture and banding of Pinyon Jays, including deployment of GPS transmitters using leg-loop harnesses; assist in the collection of biological samples from captured Pinyon Jays in the form of fecal matter, nail clipping, feathers, and blood; driving for long distances; hiking long distances in mountainous/rugged terrain to sites and identifying Pinyon Jays by auditory and sight (counts and behavioral data collection). All criteria for the crew member positions will be required for the crew leader. Crew Lead additionally will assist in weekly logistic planning of project goals, be independently comfortable performing protocols for data collection including GPS tagging Pinyon Jays, ARU deployment and processing, target capturing flocks, banding, and collecting biological samples. Crew Lead is responsible for managing time of work assigned to their team and communicating with graduate student about issues, updates, and events. Because of the remote setting of this field work crew lead must also be comfortable to make decisions when communication is limited.

Qualifications:

Applicant must be 18 years of age or older and have a valid driver’s license, with a clean driving history, and preferably 4-wheel drive vehicle experience at the time of employment. Applicant must be able to work a flexible schedule, with weekends and holidays possible depending on weather and data collection needs. Applicant must be detail oriented, self-motivated, and willing to work outdoors in harsh conditions in remote areas. Applicant must be able to work alone and within a team setting and get along with others as a successful candidate will be living with co-workers. Preference will be given to applicants with avian banding, handling, survey work histories, telemetry experience, and CPR/First AID/AED or Wilderness First Aid certification. Compensation:

$600/week with communal housing provided.
