Job Description: The Illinois Natural History Survey has 2 positions available for hourly technicians to assist with research on the abundance and diversity of breeding birds at protected state properties within and near the Starved Rock and Matthiesen State Parks near Oglesby, Illinois.
Primary Responsibilities: Determining the presence/absence and abundance of breeding birds, particularly, species of conservation concern. Specific field work will include surveying the breeding bird community within and near the Starved Rock and Matthiesen State Parks and will include conducting point counts and playbacks throughout these properties to assemble an inventory of species. These data will provide site managers with locations and abundance of conservation-relevant avian species to inform conservation decision making. Point counts and playbacks will be conducted primarily in grassland and forest habitats, but also within other peripheral habitats associated with protected lands. Some nocturnal bird surveys will also be required as well as entering and summarizing data to assist with reports
Requirements: All candidates must possess the minimum of a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate discipline and have had education or research experience closely related to the primary mission of the project. Experience in identifying (by sight and sound) bird species that breed in Illinois, particularly in forests and grasslands, is required. Incumbent must have experience conducting point counts or other similar bird survey techniques. Must be willing to work long hours outside under a variety of summer field conditions and live in a field station with others. Position requires an ability to work well independently or with others. Experience with and an ability to orienteer using a GPS unit. It is expected that applicants are capable of occasionally walking several miles through grasslands and/or forests in a given day carrying a backpack over uneven terrain. Must have a valid driver’s license. Preferred applicants will have some previous experience conducting breeding bird surveys in the Midwestern U.S.
Available: Tentative start date of early- to mid-May 2020. The positions will have an end date of no later than August 15, 2020.
Wage: $12 - $15 per hour; commensurate with experience and skills. Field vehicles provided. Housing provided with shared housing located in Oglesby, Illinois less than ten miles away from most of the field sites.
