One field technician is needed to conduct research on Eastern Black Rails (a federally threatened species) along the lower Arkansas River in southeastern Colorado. The successful candidate will work with a Master’s Student throughout the field season. The goal of the project is to estimate abundance and determine habitat use of these secretive marsh birds. Duties will include conducting call broadcast surveys, setting up automatic recording units, and maintaining camera trap arrays. Additionally, the technician will collect habitat measurements at survey sites. Field work will include early morning and late night surveys. There will be considerable driving time to some of the locations. A vehicle will be provided for field work. Field conditions involve hot days and lots of bugs. Start date will be April 11, 2022 and the approximate end date will be August 15, 2022.

    Salary: $17.50 with housing provided

*Note: These birds are incredibly secretive and the project includes non-invasive work. Because of this, there is no guarantee you will see a Black Rail.
