    Job Description:

    Point count technicians (2) needed for Black-capped Vireo and Golden-cheeked Warbler monitoring projects at Balcones National Wildlife Refuge as part of a cooperative agreement with USFWS. This is an opportunity to be involved with monitoring of an endangered species and recently de-listed species in a unique area of the Edwards Plateau of Texas.


    Primary duties:

    Early-morning point counts to survey for BCVI and GCWA

    Data entry and proofing.

    Other responsibilities may include (but are not limited to)

    Equipment maintenance

    Managing databases


    Candidates will be expected to work long hours with early starts in relatively difficult field conditions (e.g., high temperature, plenty of sun, rough terrain, lots of hiking).

    On-site Housing will be provided. Candidates should be flexible about housing. Candidates will be expected to adhere to health advisories.

    A field vehicle will be available, but individuals may need to use their personal vehicle to and from field sites. 

    Mileage will be reimbursed.

    Personal vehicles should be in good condition and able to handle dirt/gravel roads.
    *Note that road conditions may be difficult in some areas depending on weather.



    Experience with identification of Texas birds (especially BCVI and GCWA)

    Experience conducting avian point counts

    Experience with distance estimation preferred

    Excellent time management skills

    Excellent navigational abilities

    Meticulous data collection skills

    The ability to work independently

    Good inter-personal skills

    A valid driver’s license

    Must be 18 years old or older and eligible to work in the US

    Selected candidate will need to be able to pass a hearing test

    Must be willing to undergo a background check.
