BIRD BANDER/FIELD TECHNICIAN

BIRD BANDER/FIELD TECHNICIAN needed for Smithsonian citizen science program. Assistance is needed in the Raleigh, NC region for 1.5 – 2 months within the May – July, 2021 period (exact starting and end dates flexible). Neighborhood Nestwatch (NN) is a long-term Smithsonian citizen science program which takes place in urban/suburban backyards in various regional locations in the U.S. Normally the work entails conducting scientific activities as well as enhancing ecological understanding among citizen participants. Due to the prevalence of COVID-19 no interaction with participants will take place in 2021 but the scientific work will carry on. The work consists of conducting visits at approximately 40-50 participant properties where point count censuses, color-banding of focal species, nest searching, and re-sighting color-banded birds. Incorporation of 17-year cicada outbreak possible. All work requires an ability to capture, color-band, age, sex, and measure birds unassisted as well as communicating with participants to schedule visit dates. Applicants must have extensive experience setting up mist nets, removing captured birds unassisted, banding birds, and recording/entering data meticulously. The work requires discipline and organization to work from early morning onward 6 days per week diligently carrying out field tasks, entering data, and arranging visits to citizen properties. Stand-out applicants will also have experience with public interaction. After initial orientation, all work will be conducted independently using provided project vehicle. Ability to drive safely in a populated region required. Adherence to Smithsonian COVID prevention protocols required. Stipend $2,500-3,000/month depending on experience.
