Gateway National Recreation Area, a unit of the National Park Service, is hiring 10 temporary seasonal biological science technicians. Positions conduct shorebird (piping plover, terns and American oyster catcher) monitoring, threatened and endangered plant monitoring, data management, and interacting with park volunteers and visitors to build shared stewardship. Positions are located in the Park's Jamaica Bay Unit (Brooklyn, NY) and Sandy Hook Unit (Highlands, NJ). The announcement will be for positions at the GS 5 and GS 6 levels. Some of the parks included in the announcement have GS 6 biotech positions. Gateway does not. Applicants will have to select the GS level for consideration. Only applicants interested in GS 5 positions can be considered for the Gateway seasonal biological science technician positions.
Duties at the GS-05 grade level:
Implement established natural resource management projects.
Following instructions and standardized procedures, makes field observations of natural resource conditions.
Install, operate, and maintain resource management equipment.
Collects and organizes field data.
Ensure adequate quality control of data collected. Performs routine and recurring testing of collected samples.
Record all data collected and provides preliminary assessment and classification of the information. Seeks assistance for situations not covered.
